This is our first album of retro soul instrumentals, most of them our own original compositions, inspired by our romantic attachment to the spirit of vintage '60s soul. Although we took our time in preparing these songs, most of the performances on this album were captured in one take. At the time of the recording sessions, we had just completed a year-long club residency, so we were firing on all cylinders and sounding great. Most of these songs were written and developed during that residency, while the rest floated in at the last minute.
We set up our gear in the studio as we would on stage, and almost immediately the B3 was screaming. The room sounded great and everything felt perfect, and that inspired us to do our best playing. The session was recorded live to tape quickly and simply, with the unique warmth and fidelity of vintage analog equipment. Listening back to the tracks the following day, we were thrilled to realize that we had captured the excitement and spontaneity of a live gig with such clarity and presence.
Our goal for this album was to combine the gritty soul grooves of Booker T. and the MG's, the funky jazz lines of Jimmy Smith, and the cosmic psychedelic blues of Jimi Hendrix into an album of timeless-sounding Hammond/guitar combo tunes. We're very proud of this album, and we hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.
